Antique Zanzibar Brass Bound Teak Chest

This antique teak chest feels like it has traveled the trade winds. Reminiscent of the “Zanzibar” chests used by merchants and sea captains, this piece is defined by its robust brass binding and intricate nail head artistry. The decoration here is tactile—created by hammering hundreds of individual brass studs into the solid teak wood to form stylized motifs of vases, trees of life, and geometric protective symbols. Compact and charming at 26″ x 16″ x 13″H, this chest is built from solid teak that has aged to a warm, honey-brown patina. The metal strapping reinforces the corners, adding an industrial edge to the folk art designs. It features a central iron latch and sits low to the ground, making it a sturdy and functional storage vessel that doubles as a surface.

This small trunk is the perfect height (13″) to stack next to a low armchair. Top it with a lamp and it becomes a side table with secret storage.
